OBSERVATION / CONFESSION / TEST

┌──────────────────────────────────────┐
│ WITNESS: ___________________________ │
│ DATE: __________ PLACE: __________ │
│ STATUS: PRESENT / ABSENT / UNKNOWN │
└──────────────────────────────────────┘

I saw something.

I entered it into the record
as if the record
could hold still.

                     ┌ CERTAIN ┐

                     │         │

                     └─────────┘

I have been certain before.
I have made a clean line
and called it evidence.

    ?

The line does not confirm
what I saw.

It confirms that I looked.

CONFESSION:

I wanted the form to be stronger
than the event.

I wanted the witness
to stand outside it.

I wanted the mark
to mean one thing.

          [ THE MARK MOVES ]

At El Nido, Alphabet of Haven: Lettrism, Fluxus, and the Legacy of Villa Cernigliaro, curated by Carlotta Cernigliaro, has me thinking about the unstable border between sign and event: when a word becomes an image, when an object holds a gesture, when a score leaves room for what cannot be rehearsed.

This is not a report of what happened.

It is the apparatus of reporting:
the box,
the line,
the signature withheld,
the small tremor that enters the record.

RESULT:

☐ PROVEN
☐ ABSENT
☒ UNDETERMINED

The form remains.

The event does not.
