“I am near the top of the theatre in the dark. Next to me is a large spotlight.

I have my thoughts here, I have a good view here.

The spectacle is far away in the depth.

I shine light on it.”

— from ES: you are (a study of journals) by Ester Spitz

This exhibition brings together the evocative writings of Dutch interdisciplinary artist Ester Spitz, based in Los Angeles, and the atmospheric photography of Dutch musician and visual artist Pim Kops, taken between 1980–1983.

ES is not a direct narrative, but a dialogue—between journal and image, solitude and connection, internal terrain and external landscapes. Spitz’s text offers intimate psychological reflections on the nature of being, while Kops’ photographs traverse human connection, landscape, and the stillness of interiors, capturing the texture of a life unfolding.

Rather than illustrating one another, text and image here coexist—each offering an abstract meditation on memory, embodiment, and emotional presence during a formative period of artistic and personal inquiry.
